DECLARATION ON SITUATION IN ALEPPO

The Association of Mediterranean Ombudsmen (AOM) expresses its deep concern over the grave situation in which thousands of civilians, including children, women and wounded, are living in the city of Aleppo in Syria.

Recent news from the region indicates that civilians are victims of criminal acts, such as enforced disappearances, destruction of property, torture and execution. According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, during the last 24 hours, at least 82 civilians, including several women and children, have been executed, while other international bodies have considered the situation in Aleppo as one of the worst massacres against the civilian population after the Second World War.

The AOM calls on all stakeholders to respect human rights and international humanitarian law in situations of armed conflicts.

Pursuant to internationally recognized human rights and the need to protect such rights, the AOM calls on the international organizations to work together on priority basis to put an end to this tragedy.
